Second tag approved for use for Canadian Sheep Identification
Program
For
immediate release
GUELPH, ONTARIO November 1, 2004 The Canadian Sheep Identification
Program has expanded. As of November 1, 2004, sheep producers will have
the choice of tagging their animals with either Allflex or Ketchum tags.
By calling the Canadian Cooperative Wool Growers, sheep producers will
be able to purchase Allflex dangle and RFID tags. The use of the Allflex
tags is voluntary, with the exception of producers shipping animals into
Quebec. As of January 1, 2005, all sheep and lambs entering Quebec will
need to be tagged with an Allflex RFID tag and either the Allflex dangle
tag or the Ketchum Kurl-Lock tags.
"The introduction of the RFID tags is in response to the growing
tracking and tracing needs of Canadian Sheep Producers" says Randy
Eros, Chair of the Canadian Sheep Federation.
Regardless of the CSIP tag that is used, producers must still keep records
of movement for all sheep 18 months or older leaving any flock to a destination
other than a provincial or federally inspected abattoir. In addition,
records of movement must be kept on all breeding stock entering a flock.
The Canadian Sheep Federation is a national, non-profit organization that
represents all Canadian sheep producers. Its mission is further the viability,
expansion and prosperity of the Canadian sheep and wool industry.
To
order the Allflex tags, producers in Western Canada can call the Canadian
Cooperative Wool Growers at 1-800-567-3693 and in Eastern Canada at 1-800-488-2714
