March 22, 2004

The federal government has just announced the details for the Transitional Industry Support Program which is comprised of two components:

1. $680 million in direct payments to producers
2. $250 million in general transition payments
3. $65 million in federal top-up of Canadian Farm Income Protection

The direct payments to producers will be based on your sheep inventory as of December 31, 2003, up to $16 per sheep. Ewes that have already lambed or rams over 1 year are ineligible. The application forms will be on the Agriculture and Agri-Food website between March 25 and 29th. (www.agr.gc.ca)

Payments will be made as application forms come in. The government will be paying up to 70% to producers beginning in April. Final payment will be completed once an audit of the program and reconciliation of funds is complete.

For producers in Quebec, the Quebec government will be administering the program.

The $250 million general transition payments are available to all producers, and is based on your eligible net sales from 1998-2002. If you do not have a NISA account you will need to go the Agriculture and Agri-Food website (www.agr.gc.ca) and fill out an application.
